Take a Time Out

Outside, while i am writing, we are just beginning to feel the effects from Hurricane Earl.
  Knowing some weather is on the way, i decided to drive my wife to work in Bridgeport.  On the way up there i noticed the first drops of rain hit my windshield at 2pm.  As predicted, we are going to be spared the heavy weather, but points east are going to get hit harder. 
    The last few days i have made it a point to do some fishing.  With a major storm coming on and the pressure dropping i figured that we would have some good fishing.  Thursday the weather was perfect and Jan D and I took full advantage of the situation.  We were treated to another good morning sight fishing blues on a hot balmy mud flat.  Aquatic Life was apparent as these big blues pushed the silver sides and snapper blues around.  I guess everyone has to take their medicine every now and then, Thursday was my turn.  Jan crushed several blues on a light spinning rod loaded with 8lb test.  The hot lure was a 7.5 inch Slug-go in white!!!

He out fished me by a vast amount.  I figured my flies would get one to hit, but that was not the case.  Normally i would not care because i really enjoy casting and the fight of a fish on a fly, but these were nice fish, so i broke down and went into my rod locker.  I own a St. Croix Spinning rod with a Shimano Sustain 4000 loaded with 10lb berkley big game.  After rigging a wire trace and a rubber bait i hooked up right away.!!!!  There is just something extra special about taking fish in 4 feet of water or less, the runs are blistering. 
   The forecast was vague for the morning hours today so i did not go out.  I spent some time catching snapper blues at the dock for the pan, but i only caught one.  By the time i was done the wind was just starting out of the east, but i should have launched the boat, i had time for a trip.

This Afternoon

NE winds 5 to 10 kt...increasing to 20 to 25 kt with gusts up to 30 kt. Seas 1 ft or less...building to 2 to 3 ft. A chance of showers early...then showers likely late. Vsby 1 to 3 nm.

Tonight

N winds 20 to 25 kt with gusts up to 35 kt...becoming NW 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt after midnight. Seas 3 to 4 ft. Showers likely early in the evening...then a chance of showers in the late evening and early morning. Vsby 1 to 3 nm until early morning.

Sat

W winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt...increasing to 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 30 kt in the afternoon. Seas around 4 ft. 

 

    The approaching storm will stir the pot a little and it is a good time to step back and take a deep breath.  This may be the only break i will have to organize my gear and set some goals before the fall push starts.   I plan to restock my fly boxes, organize my stuff, retie leaders, and take it easy.  I have some real ambition to get in some great fishing over the next 2 months and i look forward to cashing in.  I also have 2 camping trips, one on my birthday(9-19) and the other in October.  I will use the down time to put all the cards in place; however,  for tonight i am going to take it easy, stay dry, and have a good cup of coffee. 

 

Only time will tell how fishing will be next week, but you can bet on your life that i will be on the hunt early next week looking for bait and fish.
